The first National Moral Promotion Master Plan, 2016-2021, aims to lay foundations to promote morality in Thai society. It also helps enhance public awareness to counter prevent, reduce, and eradicate corruption.

According to the Moral Promotion Center (Public Organization), the master plan seeks to encourage Thai people to adopt the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy, initiated by His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, as guidance in leading their lives, apart from their religious principles.

The philosophy provides guidance in terms of how one is to live one’s life within one’s means and in moderation, which, in itself, is a very strong counter-incentive to corruption and illegal means of seeking self-enrichment or advancement.

It teaches people to live modestly. If people are content with what they have, they will not have to seek anything excessively through corruption practices and cheating, or exploitation.

The National Moral Promotion Master Plan has been implemented by the Ministry of Culture, which supervises the Moral Promotion Center. It serves as one of the country’s major mechanisms to solve social problems and create a balance between materialism and spirituality among the people, based on the 20-year National Strategy.

The Moral Promotion Center is creating networks of cooperation in moral promotion as stated in the master plan, which cited corruption as a major problem that undermined national stability. Despite strong efforts, corruption still persists as a major obstacle to Thailand’s economic, political, and social development.

The introduction of the first National Moral Promotion Master Plan is said to be an effective way to set the direction to move Thailand toward a moral society and to develop the country as a model of morality in ASEAN and the world at large.
